The Comedy of Hamlet: The Cast
PREVIOUS SECTION | NEXT SECTION
Beneath the rank humor, Moranis' references to Hamlet are obvious. The inital parallel is the name of the brewery, Elsinore, which is the same name used for the setting of Hamlet. Also, the Brother's Widow motif and the resulting situations become immediately obvious as a unifying theme in these two dramas. The roles of the characters in Strange Brew correlate closely to those in Hamlet:
  • Gertrude, Pam's mother -- Gertrude, Hamlet's mother
  • Pam's uncle Claude and Brewmeister Smith (these two form a doppleganger, as will be elaborated later) -- Hamlet's uncle Claudius and the usurper of the throne
  • Pam plays the role of Hamlet
  • Bob and Doug -- the two gravediggers
  • Henry Green (Douglas Cambell), Pam's assistant -- Horatio, Hamlet's friend
  • Ted (Brian McConnachie), Smith's assistant -- Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Claudius' spies
  • Jean LaRose (Angus MacInnes), Pam's boyfriend -- Ophelia, Hamlet's girlfriend
  • and finally, the ghost of Pam's father, John Elsinore (Eric House) -- the ghost of Hamlet's father.
