Schedules didn't permit us the extra luxury of a days travel on either side of the trip as in years past, so the easy access of Highway 60 attracted us. Unlike our previous trips, we chose to access Algonquin from it's southern perimeter this year via Opeongo Lake

Our original plan for September 2000 was a seven day trip starting on Opeongo, and looping through  La Muir and Hogan Lakes via Happy Isle and Merchant Lakes on the way, and Crow Lake and Proulx Lake on the return.

Unfortunately, my partner severely injured his Achilles tendon on the first portage; he made a valiant effort not to scuttle the trip, but common sense got the better of us, so we returned early.

Still, in four days and three nights, we were rewarded with new sights, and we had some new camera gear to try out. The map on the left depicts our abbreviated route, and shows our camping spots, as well as locations of some of the panoramic images we captured.

The fall was very wet in 2000, including our brief four-day stay. Mushrooms were in abundance, more so than any of the previous trips, so we've included a separate page dedicated to the more colorful and interesting varieties.
