Arrowhead is beautiful little provincial park along Highway 11 on the east side of Algonquin. It provides a convenient stopping point to break up the 10 hour drive between metro Detroit and the Brent access site along the north central portion of Algonquin. We spent our first night at Arrowhead just a few hundred meters from Stubb's Falls
, a scenic, tanin-stained creek that spills over characteristic Algonquin-basin granite carved out by the glaciers. After setting up camp, we drove a short distance up the freeway to a two-track where we parked the car and hiked back to a small trout stream. Within an hour of hiking and wading, we were able to catch a few 8" - 10" brookies that made an excellent dinner that evening. After our supper, we were invited by a older couple to join them for coffee. They had a rather large and comfortable mobile home, especially compared to the earthy mattress we would enjoy later that evening. We stayed more than two hours chatting with the Canadian retirees about music, camping, their children, and the general state of things in that part of Canada. ### Because we had to abbreviate our trip to the interior of Algonquin, we decided to spend our last two nights at Arrowhead on the way back home. The fishing in Algonquin had been fruitless due to the late warm season, so we took advantage of the more productive streams around Arrowhead. The hiking also afforded us additional opportunities for photographing Algonquin region wildlife, like this red bellied snake.
