Mushrooms in Algonquin are as ubiquitous - and varied - as flowers. Due to the extremely damp fall, the mushrooms this year were even more plentiful than usual. In four days, we saw more mushrooms than I recall seeing in twice as many days on previous trips.

Mushrooms provide interesting and challenging photographic subjects, as they are always in deep shade, and usually very low to the ground in typically damp or muddy conditions. In years past, I've used fill flash for mushrooms, but I don't care for the unnatural harshness of the artificial lighting. This year, I shot all of the mushrooms using available light with much more pleasing results.
